Aldinga Beach is unusual in many ways in that it is one of the few patrolled beaches in Australia that has car access over most of its length. Most Adelaide families have fond memories of holiday shacks or sunbathing by their cars on hot summer days. To the North of the beach is the Aldinga Reef Marine Reserve, this reserve features a 10 meter dropoff from the reef top to the sand. It is an excellent example of temperature marine reef system and has fish that are only seen on the southern coastline of Australia such as the Blue Devil , Old Wife's and the iconic Leafy Sea Dragon. Car access to the beach is via one of three ramps, one at sellicks beach, one at the clubhouse at Norman Road and the third one is off the esplanade at the north. Boat launching is via the beach (so be prepared) to the North of the ramp at the Esplanade and south of the ramp at Sellicks Beach. Their is a charge to use the ramps betweeen November and March if the temperature is over 25 degrees on Saturdays, Sundays, School and Pubic Holidays. Ramps are manned by volunteers of local community clubs and proceeds to to running these organisations within the council area. If you live in the local council area a beach pass can be obtained from the council offices for free, these must be replaced every year. Speed and time restrictions apply contact the Onkaparinga council for more details. |
